Turn everyday scenarios into easy Speaking marks.
Sun Jun 8, 2025
“Speak clearly, if you speak at all; carve every word before you let it fall.” — Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
In the Speaking & Writing section of PTE Core, you’ll hear and read a short real-life scenario (e.g., asking for a day off, handling a complaint). After 20 seconds of preparation, you must record a 40-second reply that solves the problem politely and clearly.
Pearson scores your answer on just three traits:
Trait | Max Points | Impact |
---|---|---|
Appropriacy | 3 | Relevance, tone, and completeness |
Pronunciation | 5 | Clarity of sounds, word stress |
Fluency | 5 | Smooth, natural speech |
T — Task function: Identify the goal (apologise, request, reassure).20-Second Planning Demo
R — Relevant points: Note two keywords for problem + two for action.
I — Intonation & clarity: Stress content words; keep pace 140-160 wpm.
P — Polite close: Soft modal + thanks (e.g., “Could you please… Thanks for your help.”).
Opening (5 s): “Good morning, [Name]. I’m calling about (issue).”Swap synonyms each practice round to sound natural and avoid robotic delivery.
Body (25 s):
– State the situation quickly.
– Add one reason or apology.
– Offer a clear solution or request.
Close (5 s): “Thanks so much for understanding. I look forward to your reply.”
Pitfall | What Happens | Fix |
---|---|---|
Function mismatch | You apologise instead of requesting. | Find the function within 5 s, then plan. |
Topic drift | Rambling stories eat the timer. | Stick to max four bullets. |
Filler words | “Um… you know…” hurt fluency. | Replace with 0.5-s silent pause. |
Speed wobble | Racing > 160 wpm blurs sounds. | Practise speaking in a natural pace. |
Flat intonation | Monotone lowers clarity. | Mark ↑/↓ arrows on notes; smile while speaking. |
